Safety System in Aircraft Automation Essay Example

Wellbeing System in Aircraft Automation Essay What’s flying? The plane very still takes off, beating the power of gravity, it lifts with the forward push beating the air obstruction, and it is air-borne and on to its flight goal. This looks extremely basic. To accomplish this condition a few wellbeing frameworks, a large portion of them mechanized and painstakingly watched and observed by the staff on the job and the group of pilots, need to work couple and without the smallest flaw. At that point just the plane will keep awake noticeable all around.  Before attempting to comprehend the most recent security frameworks in Aircraft Automation, it is important to recognize what really is flying and what befalls it all the while. At the point when a plane is flying, it is being pulled here and there, in reverse and forwardâ€all simultaneously. There are four unique powers following up on it simultaneously. These are (I) weight (ii) lift (iii) push and (iv) drag. The weight is the power of gravity that pulls the plane dow nwards. Lift pushes the plane upward. This power is made by the wings as they slice through the air. The power of ‘drag’ pulls the plane in reverse, while ‘thrust’ pushes it forward. Push is created by propellers. A plane stays consistent in flight due to two significant reasons. (I) The push from the motor equivalents the drag power; (ii) The lift made by its wings approaches the power of gravity on the plane. Airplanes and robotization: Present day business airplane is PC commanded. The Pilot has extremely restricted manual capacities, yet this in at any rate doesn't decrease his useful duty. Despite what might be expected, his obligation is more. He should be on the alarm continually and take suitable measures based on graph and information gave by the different robotized security frameworks introduced in the airplanes.â He might not have dull errands of past times worth remembering. PCs do calculations and get information for the pilot. Be that as it may, he needs to screen the data on the pilot show and come to end results about the conduct of the plane. The information must be to the point, with no superfluous over-burdening of data. They should permit the pilot to envision accurately. The blend of these two, alluded to as constant and discrete elements, prompts incredibly complex conduct. On account of the airplane, this implies we can display how the airplane flies just as the rationale which drives the airplane mechanization. Half breed frameworks are controlled through the blend of persistent and discrete signs we can legitimately alter.†(Oishi, Meeko) Business airplanes give an awesome case of cross breed frameworks. The mechanization is an unpredictable framework and the connection of complex consistent elements should be concentrated truly. The airplane carries on like an errant kid. At the point when it holds a consistent disposition, it carries on in one way, however the conduct changes when it attempts to climb and rise. Be that as it may, nothing to stress, the airplane computerization frameworks are intended for such ordinary operational consequences. They have experienced a definitive test and extreme confirmation forms. However, this is an exorbitant procedure, and the half and half procedure answers it with economy and similarly splendid execution. With the cross breed control, the plane will act like a respectful youngster, and it will never leave the protected spot. . â€Å"The result is very incredible a perplexing framework, subject to genuine mistakes and restrictions, is numerically destined to be sheltered even w ith those blunders and limitations.†(Oishi,Meeko) All wellbeing frameworks in a plane are interlinked. You can’t have one safe framework and another not all that sheltered framework.  Most of the capacities are done careful mechanization, such as clutching a consistent height, the steady rate plunge, smooth touchdown on the runway. Despite the fact that the principle part is done through mechanization, pilot is effectively engaged with these procedures. He knows what he can anticipate from computerization, his psychological mode works with sureness, he is actually mindful of his position, and exact information is made accessible to him in the cockpit interface. With these robotization offices, the pilot won't be shocked in auto arrivals. A definitive objective is to accomplish safeguard activity, which is central to the airplane business. That is the confirmation required by the clients and any slip by on this gatherings isn't endured by the voyaging open. .In this way, direct the Pilot to control the blunder is the preeminent capacity of wellbeing frameworks in airplane mechanization. The issues required for causing the blunder might be many, similar to Culture, Environment, Terrain, Fatigue, and so on. The robotization frameworks help the pilots to make situational mindfulness. Their basic significance is even more since pilot mistake related mishaps are up to 80%. Aeronautics gadgets are the impacts the preventive strategies. Pilots execute them to dodge dangers. Thus, the interface among human and machine knowledge in flight is a continuous game. Mechanization needs to win in this opposition, in light of the fact that there lays the triumph of the Pilot and the related work force that makes the air travel conceivable and alright for the travelers. Utilizing of a robotization framework doesn't imply that it is a free permit for the Pilot to press the catches and sit calm. Readiness of the Pilot and other overseeing staff identified with the airplane gets need over robotization pointers. The Pilot’s judgment is the principal alert; it should be trusted verifiably. If there should arise an occurrence of tragic setbacks, the Pilot should remain in the observer box under the watchful eye of the Court of Enquiry, the computerization frameworks are only the quiet observers. They might be censured, yet the Pilot will be punished.â The robotization frameworks should be given the significance and regard that they don't merit anything; more, not all that much. Under-dependence or over-dependence on car frameworks must be kept away from. The abilities of the Pilot are a higher priority than the computerization itself. Let them generally stay sharp and never unwind for even seconds. The mishaps happen inside a matter of split-seco nds. Utilizing intuition and judgment fitting to the event, is a mystical quality. It is obtained by experience a fine feeling of expectation and mastery proper to the event. The Pilot needs to utilize his natural capacity to ‘veto’ the recommendations and pointers of robotization. The Pilot should be a hard and smart drill sergeant to get the best out of the apparatuses of computerization. In fact one might be a Pilot, however he should be a â€Å"Professor’ too. Aside from the progression in flight innovation, he should continually refresh himself in related contextual analyses of lamentable air-disasters, spare you strategies, break down the mistake circumstances, fabricate the information base, increment the level f certainty, and hone the aptitudes. Get familiar with the lifesaving tips and methods, in light of the fact that the Pilot is legitimately liable for sparing the travelers and individuals from the team from the snapshot of take-off till the purpose of landing. The other name for each robotization framework in the airplane is wellbeing framework, to specify a couple are,  vertical speed esteem, auto flight chief framework, flight way control, radio height, essential flight show, pilot test program preparing, aural alarm, flight way boundaries, airplane flight activities, flight mode annunciation, vertical speed mode, twist sheer conditions, auto choke frameworks, dangerous activities, flight the executives framework, parallel route, group blunders, team asset the executives, airplane flight way, mode control board, airplane slow down and flight tasks directors. It is regularly said that the judgment of the individual is last over computerization. It isn't right to state that computerization is great, it is a solid assistant. Be that as it may, dependence is should be utilized with caution. â€Å"†¦..the last expert for choice and activity might be exchanged deftly and progressively among people and computerization, and that there can be cases wherein mechanization might be given the last expert for guaranteeing the wellbeing of a system.† (Inagaki, Toshiyuki) Human-focused mechanization is the interest of the cutting edge innovatively propelled framework. What will be human existence without computerization is too hard to even think about imagining. Individual is first among the equalsâ€that is the position and significance of robotization now. The force practiced via mechanization is so much that the association is exceptionally muddled. It is the extreme deal between the two, and in this manner, authority-planning and sharing is a troublesome  but inescapable errand. A pragmatic case of wellbeing framework in airplane mechanization: A significant case of the position sharing between the Pilot and mechanization is the Cockpit Task Management (CTM) The Pilot needs to perform numerous capacities at the same time for sheltered and productive flying in an advanced airplane. Insights identifying with air crashes uncover that pilot blunder is liable for about 65% of such occurrences. Of them, huge blunders identify with undertaking cockpit errands. â€Å"The cockpit is a situation, where conceivably numerous significant undertakings go after pilot consideration at some random time. Cockpit Task Management (CTM) is the procedure by which pilots specifically take care of errands so as to accomplish the mission objective. It figures out which of maybe numerous simultaneous undertakings the pilot(s) atte

The legal response to domestic violence The WritePass Journal

The legitimate reaction to abusive behavior at home Unique The legitimate reaction to abusive behavior at home AbstractChapter 1: IntroductionChapter 2: Definition of ‘domestic abuse’ and a background marked by the police response.2.1 Definition2.2 Police Response to Domestic Violence Pre-19802.3 Police Response to Domestic Violence Post-1980Chapter 3: FeminismChapter 4: Legislation4.1 Criminal Law4.2 Civil LawChapter 5: Rates of revealing and non-reportingChapter 6: MethodologyChapter 7: DiscussionChapter 8: ConclusionReferencesRelated Dynamic This exposition inspects the lawful reaction to abusive behavior at home, which, throughout the years has been dependent upon a wide range of phrasing extending from ‘wife battering’ (Pizzey, 1974; Walker, 1979) to ‘intimate accomplice violence’. Giving specific consideration to the police, up until the mid 1980’s a few scientists depicted their general reaction and demeanor towards episodes of abusive behavior at home as being ‘dismissive and derogatory’ (Bourlet, 1990; Dobash and Dobash, 1980; Hanmer and Saunders, 1984; Edwards, 1989) and that, as per David Cheal (1991), the police see the family to be a private circle to which ‘access to it by the state ought to be limited’. Nonetheless, from the mid-1980’s it was perceived that there was a requirement for change in the police reaction, yet the legitimate reaction all in all and the Home Office started distributing papers on how abusive behavior at home occurrences ought to be handled by the criminal equity framework. In addition to the fact that this raised attention to the issue it empowered various associations, both legal and willful, to cooperate which was a piece of the Home Office’s between office activity in 1995. All the more as of late, there have been various rules set up that can additionally help the police in their reaction to aggressive behavior at home and all the more significantly they empower them to treat episodes inside the family between life partners as they would occurrences that occur in the city between outsiders. Part 1: Introduction Abusive behavior at home has for quite some time been an issue among society, yet until the 1980’s the organizations answerable for ensuring casualties of wrongdoing gave practically no consideration to the issue itself, specifically the police demonstrated hesitance to examine and arraign as they accepted that ‘the family is a private circle so access to it by the state ought to be limited’ (Cheal, 1991). Nonetheless, it is mistaken to imagine that abusive behavior at home is not, at this point an issue in the public eye today and as indicated by the 2009/10 British Crime Survey (BCS) seven percent of females contrasted with four percent of guys matured somewhere in the range of 16 and 59 are right now casualties of aggressive behavior at home (Flatley et al., 2010). Insights likewise show that among July and September 2009 there was a five percent expansion in sexual offenses which is in contrast with a similar time of the earlier year (Home Office, 2009). As indicated by Walby and Allen, (2004) the British Crime Survey (BCS) assessed that an amazing 12.9 million aggressive behavior at home episodes against ladies and 2.5 million occurrences against men occurred in England and Wales in 2003 with 45 percent of ladies and 26 percent of men encountering in any event one occurrence of relational brutality in the course of their life. From this, it is subsequently flawed whether aggressive behavior at home is viewed as being either legitimately or socially satisfactory, the same number of specialists have found, from their examination, that the criminal equity framework give off an impression of being ‘covertly tolerant’ (Berk et al., 1980) of the issue when actually the offenses perpetrated in vicious connections are indistinguishable to that of an offense against the individual. Because of this claimed blasã © approach by the police to episodes of abusive behavior at home, Smith (1989) found that survivors of aggressive beha vior at home just reached the crisis benefits if all else fails and on normal endure 35 assaults before making the fundamental call to the police (Jaffe, 1982) which as a result conflicts with what the police as an office represent, that is, they are a crisis administration and should act expeditiously and offer a compelling assistance and not leave casualties of abusive behavior at home with almost no confidence in their work. Be that as it may, as indicated by Stanko (2000) despite the fact that solitary a little minority of casualties report abusive behavior at home to the police, with figures appearing around 40 percent really being accounted for to the police (Dodd et al, 2004; Walby and Allen, 2004; Home Office, 2002), they still on normal get one call each moment in regards to aggressive behavior at home episodes in the UK adding up to a normal deluge of 1,300 calls per day or 570,000 calls for each year. The following section to follow is the writing survey in which the definition and scopes of phrasing will be investigated from past to present as to show the progressions that have occurred during the time alongside the obvious absence of cognizance that have caused numerous analysts incredible trouble while looking into this specific territory. The writing audit will at that point keep on taking a gander at the police reaction to abusive behavior at home from a verifiable viewpoint, in particular pre-1980, and afterward move onto a later viewpoint from the 1980’s onwards as a near. While the police reaction is vital to this exposition, it isn't exclusively aimed at one single organization and the writing survey will go on fundamentally break down the enactment, both common and criminal, as of now set up and enactment that was recently used to give a diagram of the legitimate reaction overall and how it has changed nearby the adjustments in the police reaction. The last piece of the writing survey will take a gander at paces of announcing and non-revealing of episodes to the police and inspect whether there has been an expansion of detailed occurrences since new enactment has been presented and changes in police rehearses have occurred or if there is as yet a hesitance by the casualties to report it that has been clear in past occasions. Part 2: Definition of ‘domestic abuse’ and a past filled with the police reaction. 2.1 Definition Throughout the years there have been various terms, running from ‘wife battering’ (Pizzey, 1974; Walker, 1979) to ‘intimate accomplice violence’, which have been utilized to depict what is most generally known as ‘domestic violence’. One regular issue that numerous specialists in the field have found is that of the definition and its absence of soundness between the scholars of the issue, the Government and furthermore the individuals from people in general, who may simply utilize expressions, for example, ‘wife battering’ without completely valuing the idea of the issue and the mischief it can cause. So as to handle this absence of soundness the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) set out an official meaning of abusive behavior at home which characterizes it as being â€Å"any occurrence of undermining conduct, brutality or misuse (mental, physical, sexual, money related or enthusiastic) between grown-ups who are or have been close accomplices or relatives, paying little mind to sex or sexuality†. (Home Office, 2010) This definition given by the Home Office has been extended since the past definition (Circular 19/2000), which enigmatically depicted aggressive behavior at home as ‘any brutality between present or previous accomplices in a personal connection any place and at whatever point it occurs’, and is currently observed to additionally feature the viciousness that can occur between relatives who are 18 years old and over and furthermore incorporates different sorts of misuse that can likewise happen (for example monetary, passionate and so on.) instead of simply being worried about the physical savagery. Past to this refreshed definition, ‘domestic violence’ was perceived as the most regularly utilized expression and the term of decision among specialists in the region (Smith, 1989) regardless of having a ‘far from uncritical reception’ (Mullender, 1996). Kashani and Allen (1998) remarked upon this and expressed that because of the sheer multifaceted nature of the issue, regarding its components (for example money related, enthusiastic, mental), that it would be out of line and unreasonable to exclusively see it as an issue of ‘violence’ thus the term ‘abuse’ occurred and has since made attention to the way that the issue isn’t simply worried about physical brutality yet additionally different angles that aren’t viewed as fierce, in essence. 2.2 Police Response to Domestic Violence Pre-1980 Abusive behavior at home is in no way, shape or form a ‘new’ wrongdoing. In any event, going back to the twelfth century abusive behavior at home was common, as chapel law expressed in 1140 that ‘women were liable to their men’ and ‘needed to be amended through censure or punishment’. (Dutton, 1995 in Melton, 1999). The guys have for quite some time been viewed as having the force in the family and as indicated by the Napoleonic Civil Code in 1804, ‘violence was possibly justification for a separation for a lady if the courts concluded that it added up to endeavored murder’ (Dutton, 1995). English precedent-based law even permitted men to beat their spouses with a stick no greater than the width of their thumb, giving the term ‘rule of thumb’, and was supposed to be ‘uncivilised’ if the stick surpassed the standard (Brown, 1984). Given this, aggressive behavior at home wasn’t saw to be an issue for t he police as the laws set up really approved savagery by men against ladies and just positioned restrictions with respect to how far the men could beat their spouses, to which any further was just classed as being wrong, not criminal or culpable. All the more as of late in the twentieth century, the police reaction to charges of abusive behavior at home has confronted a lot of analysis for their supposed ‘dismissive and injurious wayâ€?

My IAP

My IAP Mighty Mugs Ahh my IAP is going to be so cool!!! There are quite a few things. First of all, IAP is MITs Independent Activities Period, where MIT students have the whole month of January to do anything they want from working at an awesome company to making teapots to throwing things off of roofs. I like lists. Heres my happy list of things to look forward to for IAP: Mighty Mugs Cocktails 101 FormLabs Bad Ideas Getting Better Next Semester Cats So lets take this one by one. Mighty Mugs IM GOING TO MAKE MUGS!! I was having my favorite caramel hot cider at Coffeehouse 1369 in Central Square with one of my favorite persons in the world Claire L. 17 when she brought up that there were ceramics classes offered during IAP and that we should take one together. We looked up the classes and were so excited to see that there was a mugs class MUGS!! I love mugs!! One mug for me, one for my mom, one for my moms best friend Joan ALL THE MUGS! IT IS SO EXCITING! We signed up for the class right there and then at the small hispter-esqe coffee shop, took a journey to whole foods, and went home. It was an awesome adventure, and Im so excited to spend my Monday nights making mugs with a great friend!! Cocktails 101 IM GOING TO MAKE COCKTAILS! Im so excited! This is a class that I have been told about many times as being a great one. MIT Alumni and bartenders at the fancy Craigie on Main restaurant/bar teach MIT students/affiliates/alumni how to create fancy cocktails the correct way, and I am treating myself to this class as a present for my recent 21st birthday! FormLabs IM GOING TO BE WORKING FOR A REALLY COOL 3D PRINTING COMPANY ON THE MATERIALS TEAM!! IT IS SO EXCITING! I AM REALLY EXCITED! Bad Ideas PINEAPPLES! To find out what I mean, youre just going to have to keep reading these blogs and looking out for my blog post about Bad Ideas Weekend at the end of January. Or go to my event. It involves pineapples, lighters, and butter knives. I hope it gets approved. Getting Better I was sick this last semester. Sick and tired and everything went wrong. But there are so many great things to look forward to, and I am going to dedicate some of my IAP to doing some great things, helping some great people, and being around awesome projects. And some bad ideas. And Im taking so many vitamins and washing my hands constantly with the hope of avoiding the flu. I really really really dont want the flu. Next Semester OH MY GOSH MY SCHEDULE IS SO COOL SO MANY AWESOME WRITING CLASSES I AM SO EXCITED! More on this later :) Cats I have the best cat Also, Taylor Swift My IAP What am I up to? My Thesis This is probably any grad student’s answer to that question, no matter the time of year. This winter I have started working in the Sabeti lab at the Broad, my thesis lab. This is the lab I most wanted to work in and least expected to take me, the lab whose papers I read for class and whose writing and clean, minimalist figures I idolized, the lab whose PI I awkwardly Googled thinking someday I’d like to be her (only still me, but also her, but also definitely still me, but just kind of maybe her). The fact that I am here is mindblowing. Over IAP I am working on a short-term project and my thesis proposal. After that there are three planned projects of unknown length, at least one of which will comprise my thesis and the next year and a half of my life. With these projects I’ve shifted my focus slightly, from human to viral evolution. All of my work is related to this recent paper, which you may or may not be able to read without being on a college wifi network. Amazingly, the lab gave me a third of a beautiful office (which so far is always empty except for me). I’m hoping to buy prints of some of my favorite boat and buffalo paintings the next time we go to the MFA. There’s lots of space and not entirely sure what to do with it (except sit there and work, which I guess is the point).     At the top left is a view of the Broad from outside. The purple awning in the distance is Sebastian’s, a crêpe and sandwich bistro. The Broad has its own entrance to Sebastian’s, a daily temptation that I am proud to say I have only twice succumbed to. At the top right is a cool mobile hanging from the ceiling of the lobby on the first floor. The lobby is open to the public during the day. It’s like a small, spacious genetics and evolution museum with couches. If you’re around you should stop by. The bottom photos are the view from my desk and my third of the office (one third belongs to my 6.047 TA and the final third is unoccupied). I don’t have a window, but the offices across from mine do and that is a lot like having a window myself. You can’t see it in the photo, but there was a beautiful thick snowfall outside that evening. One of the laptops on my desk is my personal computer, which now lives at home. The other is my work computer, which will live at work. I’m hoping to be able to do my on-campus TA work and email checking entirely from my iPad and limit my laptop carrying, which may or may not be possible. I also have a landline. I have absolutely no idea what to do with a landline. I also have no idea what to do with the whiteboard or the shelves or three of the five drawers (my figure skates live in the bottom right drawer and my headphones and pens live in the top left drawer). I have a lot of trouble sitting still at work. I like to get up and get tea and enter and exit rooms and look through windows and walk past people’s offices. My favorite place to sit when I’m reading papers or doing work that doesn’t require a computer is an alcove right next to the kitchen with a view of some of the Broad and Whitehead wet labs. The labs are in neat rows and columns, in each window a researcher and their small expanse of new knowledge of humans and the worlds around and inside us. It makes me very happy to sit there and drink tea and read and watch the windows. I feel a pleasant oneness with the research community around me, even though I haven’t met most of its members and I don’t know what most of them are working on.  I’m very happy to have my own piece of a square in a similar grid.   On the top right is my favorite cozy space by the window and on the left is the view from that window. The Broad is the building on the left and the Whitehead is the darker building on the right. (Just out of frame on the left is somebody’s post-it note office window art.) On the bottom left is the floor’s Keurig. In our first interaction it ate a cup and did not give it back. Now I feel like we have an understanding. It seems to be busy computing something else when we’re not bothering it and I wonder what it’s been up to and whom it is working for. Sometimes I catch myself apologizing to it and saying thank you when it’s made my coffee. It makes a very pleasant whirring sound. I hope it doesn’t hurt me someday. I quite like it. TAing TAing started up again late last week. In addition to the visible things that 6.005 TAs do (go to class, hold office hours, mentor project groups, and give feedback on and then grade student code), we also do a lot of work below the surface: specifically, we help build and maintain tools and we playtest (as in, do) the problem sets and projects before they get to the students. That second chunk is what we’re trying to get out of the way before the start of the semester. So far I ported class names and student deadlines into Stellar, MIT’s course management system, learned Google Apps Script, which is a lot like JavaScript, and wrote a friendly 389-line bot that reads from a staff calendar and emails staff members when they have things to do. Up ahead is playtesting more p-sets and the project. I can’t see them so I’m not worrying about them (healthy attitude, right?). We meet up on the seventh floor of Stata, which is conveniently just across the street from the Broad.   On the left is a view of Stata from building 56, near the end of the Infinite. On the right are snow-covered benches on the other side of Stata, at the edge of the courtyard. The two people walking in the distance are walking toward the intersection of Vassar and Main, the most terrifying intersection I have ever experienced. The Whitehead Institute and the Broad are to the right, behind the Koch Institute and across the street. Phys Ed Finally, I am taking advantage of this relatively relaxing time to honor my heritage by learning Russia’s national pastime of hunting polar bears on figure skates (not actually (we don’t do that (if we do no one told me))). I never graduated. Instead, I’ll be getting both my degrees (bachelor’s and master’s) when I finish my master’s in 2016 (knock on wood). (In other words, Lydia K. ‘14, MEng ‘16 is a lie: I’m actually Lydia K. ‘16, MEng ‘16.) The downside of this situation is that if I screw up, I get nothing. Some perks are that I get to mix up my graduate and undergraduate classes, starting the former early and finishing the latter late, I get to live in my undergraduate dorm for two extra semesters, and I get to register for phys ed classes with the undergraduates (grad students register later, after the awesome classes are taken). This IAP I am finishing up my phys ed requirement with two classes. On Mondays and Wednesdays I go to rifle, where so far we have learned the history and anatomy of rifles and shot our first rounds from a seated position (this coming week we move on to standing). The focus of the class is on leaving stress outside the shooting range, breathing, and listening to our bodies and minds. At around the same time on Tuesdays and Thursdays I go to figure skating. Figure skating with my mom was a very big part of my childhood. When we lived in Chicago I took classes a few days a week in the winters at an outdoor rink no one seemed to know about, the Daley Bicentennial Plaza (which was taken down a few years ago; now it seems to exist again under a different name). This is my second time taking the phys ed class. It feels good to be back on the ice. I always feel buoyant and overflowing with happy energy after skating, more me: I think figure skating is one of the threads that connect me to my favorite parts of my past selves and the very different stages of my life. Rifle is the class I registered for when the registration system opened at 8 am. Figure skating I showed up to on the first day and got a spot. Conveniently, my two phys ed classes now are at about the same time as my two academic classes will be during the semester. Hopefully this is good practice organizing my more flexible responsibilities around set commitments.       At top left is my target from our second day of shooting. The bottom row is MIT’s beautiful ice rink, my figure skates, which I brought over from Pennsylvania, and the leggings my mom gave me for Christmas. At top right are some snow-covered rocks outside the Z Center, our gym. Figure skating is on the first floor. Rifle is at the shooting range in duPont, behind and attached to the Z Center, closer to Random Hall. The Student Center is on the left behind the trees. Lobby 7, the small dome, 77 Mass Ave, is ahead. Figure skating especially is wonderful: after the 15-ish-minute trek to the Z Center from lab, I walk out of the biting cold into the gentler cold of the rink. After exercise I step out, back into the snow, and the same biting cold feels more pleasant. Winter is my favorite season, next to autumn. Campus is beautiful.   On the right is the small dome (Lobby 7) viewed from across Mass Ave, right next to the Student Center. Lobby 7 is 77 Mass Ave, the physical address you send your application materials to if you send your application materials by mail. On the left is the view from inside the big dome, the other side of the iconic view you might think of when you think of MIT. We are looking across Killian Court, where graduation and freshman convocation are held. Boston is in the distance, across the Charles River. Behind us is Lobby 10 and the Infinite Corridor.

Do Not Go Gentle Beowulf, Rhetorical Analysis - 904 Words

â€Å"Do Not Go Gentle† Beowulf, Rhetorical Analysis Life and death are two of the most extensive topics that could be discussed. In regards to â€Å"Do Not Go Gentle†, Dylan Thomas articulates his sincere message on man’s great journey and his demise through the use of expansive literary devices; with the use of riveting rhetoric, the author of Beowulf clearly expresses his view on these broad topics thoroughly. By complimenting the content of their work with the allusive message of the way a man’s life should be led, both authors appeal to the readers’ sense of reason. Although the authors’ incorporate their messages similarly into their own text, some of their views contrast in nature due to the culture that produced it. The author†¦show more content†¦The author achieves his goal of communicating his message through the use of literary techniques. Both Beowulf and â€Å"Do Not Go Gentle† use effective rhetorical methods to express their message, yet the messages themselves differ. Since Beowulf was written between the eighth and eleventh century, the author’s view of life and death was different from Dylan Thomas’ view. In Beowulf, the concept of becoming renown by accomplishing heroic deeds and disregarding death was the norm. Whereas in present day, people are very cautious of death and focus on preserving their lives until death comes. The culture of the author’s plays a huge role in the nature of the communicated ideas. The concepts of life and death can be portrayed using numerous literary devices and embellished ideas. The author of Beowulf entirely uses enhanced literary techniques to express ideas because it is an advanced rhetoric; Dylan Thomas also integrates accelerated rhetorical devices to express his ideas on life into his poetry so that the reader’s emotions are touched by the author. Both authors make sure that their messages are fully incorporated into the text so that the readers can take something away from their work. Although the authors use various forms of literary devices to express their ideas, the nature of their message is relatively concrete in regards to the different cultures they experienced in their lives. Life and death are two vast concepts that will never have one

Essay about Shinichirō Watanabe Genre Mixing at Its Best

Cowboy Bebop is a title which many anime fans are familiar with. Arguably, it is one of the best anime series ever made, but nonetheless can be recognized as a great piece of art created by the show’s director; ShinichirÃ… Watanabe. Truth is, this is not Watanabe’s only spectacle. Although it first aired in 2004 (about five years after Cowboy Bebop last aired), Samurai Champloo can also be recognized as another one of Watanabe’s â€Å"masterpieces†. Even though he uses the same style as a basis to craft both Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop, each show brings a completely different experience. What makes them unique from other anime is an element that can be known as â€Å"genre mixing†. How Watanabe mixes genres between Samurai Champloo and Cowboy†¦show more content†¦Slowly the scene becomes more and more intense as we keep getting surprised to what Spike endures to survive right until the moment where both Vicious and Spike face off. T he spaghetti western genre can be seen through how the fights feel, never giving the viewer a chance to even be able to guess what will happen next before and after that first shot or move is made. The show is also a brilliant comedy. Though the show wouldn’t necessarily be placed under comedy for its genre, the clever use of it gives the audiences a form of relief that makes sure the show does not fall into taking itself too seriously. After the shootout is over and Spike wakes up on a couch completely covered in bandages, he listens to Faye hum a smooth tune. He then signals her to come close to be able to whisper to her, â€Å"You sing off key†. After having that ruthless shootout finally conclude, there is wiggle room to add a joke and give the viewer a better feeling of relief. There is also episodes that are meant to be completely comedic (Mushroom Samba), but would never be as funny if we hadn’t had the chance to get to know these characters before. Most of the use of comedy is by placing the characters in ridiculous situations which you haven’t seen them in before. Cowboy Bebop is also influenced by Bruce Lee and the Martial Arts. Spike’s fighting style is the same as Bruce Lee, which is called Jeet Kune Do. One major piece of evidence behind this is when Spike

It is they who influence the immature minds of the youth and tries to mold the living stuff into various forms. It is they on who depends the future of the nation. Hence, they are the most important part of the society. In the past, teachers were considered respectable figures even by the kings and the emperors, because only teachers were there to guide and advise them in hours of crisis. They were the true benefactors of the society. With the change of time they lost their dignity to some extent. Still, they are considered the backbone of a nation, and a society. Teachers are the real guide of the students. With their deep knowledge of the subject and teaching technique they can impart valuable information to the students. All these qualities enable a child to grow into an ideal citizen of his/her nation. The importance of the role of the teachers as an agent of change, promoting understanding and tolerance has become more obvious today. This places enormous responsibilities on teachers who participate in the molding of the character and minds of the new generation. Now days, the whole scenario has been changed. Teachers and parents are engaged in blaming each other. Parents are displeased with them because their sons and daughters do not do well in the examination. Teachers blame the parents that they do not pay much attention on their wards due to lack of time. The overall result is that the students have become aggressive, bold and daring- They are less concerned with their studies and think more about other activities. The teachers become helpless at this juncture. They do not get proper respect from the students. In addition to this, the teachers are not paid highly and regularly. This makes their situation miserable. It is necessary to improve the conditions of the teachers. Only then they will continue their job with full vigor and zeal. Knowledge received without a teacher’s guidance can be compared to a blind man walking without his stick. ESSAY ON INFLATION Inflation refers to a continuous, general increase in the price of goods and services. You read "ï » ¿Environmental Pollution" in category "Papers" Rise in prices is called inflation. Inflation at very fast rate is Hyper-Inflation, medium is Strato-Inflation and low lever is Creeping inflation. During the recent years the rise has abnormal and it has endangered the stability of our economy nationally and individually. In Pakistan inflation has become an unending disease to our economy. Once a state is caught in the circle of inflation then it will be difficult for that state to get rid of it. There are various factors that contribute to the rise in prices. Some are natural factors like unfavorable weather conditions which affect the food production and lead to the shortage of commodities in the market. Besides this natural problem there are man-made problems like hoarding which contribute to the rapid increase in prices. The trading community which senses a shorting of certain commodities, especially the essential commodities, they resort to large scale hoarding. They release the hoarding products after increase in the prices and make a neat margin over their investment in the hoarded products. They get so much profit but it waters inflation. The rise of prices in Pakistan can also be attributing to the despicable acts of traders. This has created a class of people who are becoming richer day by day and the other class is becoming poorer. Hoarding is also playing a bad role in escalation of prices in the commodities One of the most important reasons for inflation is the deficit budgeting. Pakistan has been printing more paper currency because foreign aid and taxes cannot cover up the deficit. Therefore there will be greater circulation of paper money. There will be hike in prices of domestic used products as the purchasing power of the people has increased. Wrong taxation policy has also been responsible for the rise in prices. The hike in taxes results in greater desire to avoid taxes. Thus public takes wrong way of not paying taxes and there will be escalation in prices. Pakistan’s government has been making a great effort to check this inflation. The government is making efforts to increase industrial outputs so that the level of consumption is leveled with that of output. But unfortunately the government has not met with success in getting rid of inflation. The rise in prices goes non-stopped, some suggest that there should be demonetization of currency, but the government thinks that it is an irregular method and will create doubts in the minds of the public about the stability of the government. The rise in the prices of petrol has affected the prices in our country. Pakistan is not producing more than 20% of its total requirement of oil. So we have to import a huge amount of oil every year. Moreover no step has been taken against the traders who are mainly responsible for unreasonable rise in the prices. The Horrible Dream Last night was different from a usual night. It was getting dark very early and weather was colder than before. I looked outside through the window crack. Trees were shaking. It looked like the wind was playing with the trees. When I went back to my bed, all my roommates were sleeping deeply I checked my watch, it was 11. 30. Again I tried to sleep but I couldn’t, so I covered my head with pillows and I slept very deeply and had a strange dream, which I didn’t want to happened. In my dream, my dad told me on the phone that, he felt sick. I felt very nervous and I run towards him as quick as possible but, it was as difficult as climbing the desert mountain. It was very hard to reach him. At last, I got there but my father had already died. The house was empty, I called father three times but nobody responded. Then I realized that he had left me alone. I didn’t see anything and it was like full of thick cloud in front of my eyes. After sometimes, I saw some monks but they didn’t talk to me. My eyes brimmed with tears. I cried very loudly. Tears automatically rolled down from my eyes. I felt, I would never see him again. This strong feeling woke me up. My pillow was wet with my tears. I looked at my watch. It was 4. 30 I didn’t want to get up from my cozy bed so I slept again. When I realized, it was all a dream. I calmed down but my heart was still beating really fast. I expected to break down very soon because I wanted to make a phone call to my family and I wanted to know about him. After two class finished I called him. I was delighted to hear his soft voice. My pain was healed. Essay 7 My Favorite Season – Winter My favorite season is winter. And snow indicates the coming of winter. I always wonder how magic and delicate the shape of snow is. It seems like being carved by artist. No doubt, snow is the most wonderful creation of the nature. I have had special feeling toward snow since I was a little girl. I like watching snow falling down from the sky especially at nights with the light of moon that it is great. Some people dislike winter because they think that there is no fun in winter, everything is covered by snow and the weather is cold. But to me, there are a lot of beautiful memories about winter. When I was young, I used to hung out with neighborhood kids after school even the weather was severe. Actually we were looking for the heavy snow at the very beginning of winter. Because we were fond of having snowball fight and making snowman as well as going sledding. We were so happy when playing in the snow. We didn’t care how cold our hand were, how dirty our cloths were. The only things we cared about were who could win in the fight, who could make the best snowman and who could sled the fastest. However, we had to stand the complaint from parents. Another reason for me to like winter is Spring Festival. It is the most important festival in China. On those days, everyone would go back home to be with family and celebrate. It is also the most traditional holiday to Chinese, so everyone would take a break on these days no matter how busy he/she is. To me, the happiest things are that I can eat hot pot with my family. In my family, eating hot pot on New Year’s even is the custom so on this day every member of my family would sit around the table to share the hot pot together as well as chatting. It’s really an enjoyable thing to eat hot pot in cold winter especially with the family. I keep those memories as my fortune and I wish everybody could like winter as I do. Co-Education Means Educating sexes, boys and girls together in an institute or in a class. In our country there is co-education in some colleges and schools, but in most colleges and schools there is arrangement for separate education for boys as well as for girls. Co-education has remained controversial issue in our country. Some people are in favour of this system and want to introduce it in all schools and colleges. They say that this system is very useful. They give many arguments in its favour. Their main argument is that in a poor and backward country like Pakistan it is very difficult to maintain separate institutions for boys and girls. Therefore co-education also says that in progressive society young boys and girls should come closer. Co-education would provide an opportunity to the young boys and girls to understand each other. This would be very helpful for them in future life. It would also be good for the progress of the country. Another argument is that, co-education would raise the standard of education, because it will promote competition among boys and girls. But certain conservative people criticize the system of co-education. According to them, this system is against our religion and Islamic traditions. They also fear that co-education will develop immoral relations between boys and girls. Their fears are true but some proper arrangements should be made by the government to make it possible to impart education to the girls and boys in separate institutions special attention should be paid to the education for girls at college, and university level. So that no girl should be deprived of the right of acquiring higher education if she likes. Demerits of Internet: There are still a lot of people who see the Internet as a promoter of immorality with all the pornographic materials. Let us ask ourselves. Is that all that there is in the Internet? Once asked a student from a rural area in my class if they had Internet connection in their house. The reply was his father would not allow due to the usual concern, you know what. Besides the demerit of X rated material there are problems of hacking, using email / chat to kidnap / cheat a person on the other side has also be seen. Merits of Internet: The Internet offers various useful tools for communication, among which we might mention electronic mail, the World Wide Web, newsgroups, remote access, file transfer and text-based and voiced-based chat. The net has become the most important e-mail system in the world because it connects so many people worldwide, creating a productivity gain. Organizations use it to facilitate communication between employees and offices, and to communicate with customers and suppliers. Friends and family use e- mail in replacement to snail mail, due to its speed and flexibility. Usenet Newsgroups or Forums are worldwide discussion groups in which people share information and ideas on defined topics of different ranges. Telnet is yet another communication function of the Internet. It allows someone to be on one computer system while doing work on another. Information retrieval is the second basic Internet function. Many use of the Internet to locate and download some of the free, quality computer software that has been made available by developers on computers all over the world. File transfer protocol (FTP) is used to access a remote computer and retrieve files from it. FTP is a quick and easy method if you know the remote computer site where the file is stored. Once a file has been located, FTP makes transfer of the file to your own computer very easy. There are hosts of directories that have been made accessible for FTP to search for files and businesses can use them to locate files they require for their operations. Like FTP, Gophers are another information retrieval tools that can be used to access files. A gopher is a computer client tool that enables the user to locate information stored on Internet gopher servers through a series of easy-to-use, hierarchical menus. Most files and digital information that are accessible through FTP also are available through gophers. The Internet has thousands of gopher servers† sites throughout the world. What makes gopher sites easy to use is that each gopher site contains its own system of menus listing subject-matter topics, local files, and other relevant gopher sites. There are also educational resources on the Internet. They are in various forms such as journals and database on various aspects of knowledge. For example there are sites where one can access online journals, or learn English. These sites are of tremendous help to those who are doing academic research. There are also special homepages on special topics or subjects of interest. At the moment, not many people use the Internet for this purpose. It is time we encourage our students to visit these educational sites, especially the English language ones and this will go a long way to improve their level of English. Commerce on the Internet is already a reality. The communication facilities which are on offer have rapidly become integrated as core business tools. Thus most of the business functions are communicative in nature. The emphasis to date has been on use of the Internet for communications with customers and other companies operating on collaborative ventures. However, an increasing number are concentrating on transactions between businesses and on-line sales. The Internet Mall companies offer everything from books to flowers to travel. Trading partners can directly communicate with each other without passing through middlemen and inefficient multilayered procedures. The Internet provides a public and universally available set of technologies for these purposes. Therefore, the Internet is rapidly becoming the technology of choice for electronic commerce because it offers businesses an even easier way to link with other businesses and individuals at a very low cost Handling transactions electronically can reduce transaction costs and delivery time for some goods, especially those that are purely digital (such as software, text Products, images, or videos Marketing Communication is another business function of the Internet. As the term implies, marketing communication involves the use of communication media to market a product, goods and services. The nature of marketing communication at present is different from the mass communication paradigm of old. In the present era, marketing communication is more likely to involve expenditure on direct response marketing than involve the mass communication paradigm of old. With the advent of the Internet, this traditional view of communication media has been altered. What we have now is the new many – to – many marketing communication model defining the web or Internet. This offers a radical departure from traditional marketing environments. Advantages and Disadvantages Of Internet Ten years ago, the Internet was practically unheard of by most people. Today, the Internet is one of the most powerful tools throughout the world. The Internet is a collection of various services and resources. The Internet’s main components are E-mail and the World Wide Web. Actually, there’s a lot more to the Internet than E-mail, search engines, celebrity web sites, up-to-the-second sports scores, and chat rooms full of discussions. The Net also ranks as one of today’s best business tools. Almost all households contain the Internet; however, before people connect to the Internet, they need to be aware of its disadvantages and advantages. Many people fear the Internet because of its disadvantages. They claim to not use the Internet because they are afraid of the possible consequences or are simply not interested. People who have yet connected to the Internet claim they are not missing anything. Today’s technological society must realize that it is up to them to protect themselves on the Internet. Children using the Internet have become a big concern. Most parents do not realize the dangers involved when their children connect to the Internet. When children are online, they can easily be lured into something dangerous. For example, children may receive pornography online by mistake; therefore, causing concern among parents everywhere. Whether surfing the Web, reading newsgroups, or using email, children can be exposed to extremely inappropriate material. To keep children safe, parents and teachers must be aware of the dangers. They must actively guide and guard their children online. There are a number of tools available today that may help keep the Internet environment safer for children. Musicians are also concerned with disadvantages to the Net such as, accessibility and freedom. They are upset because the Internet provides their music online at no charge to consumers. File-sharing services, such as Napster, provide copyrighted songs to all Internet users. The main concern is the music is free! Musicians feel they are not getting paid for their work. Because of Napster, it is almost impossible to close down all file-sharing services because there are too many of them to count. Today, not only humans getting viruses, but computers are also. Computers are mainly getting these viruses from the Internet, yet viruses may also be transferred through floppy disks. However, people should mainly be concerned about receiving viruses from the Internet. Some of these dangerous viruses destroy the computer’s entire hard drive, meaning that the user can no longer access the computer. Virus protection is highly recommended. Despite all of the terrible disadvantages of the Internet, there are numerous advantages. In fact, the advantages weigh out the disadvantages. The most common thing the Internet is used for is research. Children and students are among the top people who use the Internet for research. Nowadays, it is almost required that students use the Internet for research. The Internet has become one of the biggest sources for research. Almost every day, research on medical issues becomes easier to locate. Web sites have become available for people to research diseases and talk to doctors online at sites such as, America’s Doctor. Shopping online has also become a huge success and is considered a great advantage of the Internet. No matter what people are shopping for, it can be found on the Internet. People do not even have to leave their homes. A few companies have collected millions of dollars using the Internet for selling. Clothing is probably one of the most bought items online. Almost every major clothing store has its own Web site. In fact, In US, people can even go grocery shopping online using such sites as Priceline. com. Just one click of the mouse on the items they want to purchase and the items are delivered to their front door. Unfortunately, this kind of service is not yet available in Malaysia for the time being. Groceries and clothing are only a few of the items that may be bought on the Internet. In conclusion, today’s society is in the middle of a technological boom. People can either choose to take advantage of this era, or simply let it pass them by. The Internet is a very powerful tool. It has many advantages; however, people need to be extremely aware of the disadvantages as well. What Are Outdoor Games? We play some games in the open air. These are called outdoor games. The Pakistani games like Hadu-du also called Kabadi, Dandaguli, etc. are outdoor games. We play these games in an open field. Football, cricket, hockey, tennis, etc. are also outdoor games. These are western games. These games were introduced into our country by the English. We have learnt to play these games quite well. Part of education Outdoor games are now part of our education in the school. Formerly it was not so. At present many schools have their own playgrounds. The students of the schools take part in outdoor games. Youngman of Pakistan is now taking great interest in outdoor games. Value of these games These outdoor games have great value. Our brain is worked for a long time. If we play in the afternoon, we inhale fresh air and feel refreshed. Our body is also exercised. Thus our health is improved. These games help us to form our character too. They help in developing our personality. We learn many things from these games. We have to form a team to play the games. We learn the value of cooperation and unity. We have to obey the orders of the captain. Thus we learn obedience, discipline and order. We become generous and imbibe fellow-feeling. Outdoor games save us from evil temptations and guide us to walk in the path of virtue and duty. The Public, our Government and Games and Sports The public and our Government have felt the importance of games and sports. We have now Sports Ministers at the Centre and at the State level to look after the games and sports of the country. The public have also organizations to look after these. Our Government at the Centre as well as at the State level spends money to encourage young boys and girls to be good players and sportsmen and sports-women. Those who show exceptional skill in games and sports now earn a lot of money. So if some students cannot be successful in general education, they may try to be successful in games and sports and earn a lot of money and thus attain success in life. Conclusion The Western games are costly. Pakistani games are not so. But in towns Western games are mostly played. In villages, native games are generally played. Football and cricket are also played there now-a-days. Sometimes we are hurt and receive injuries while playing them. On some occasions bitter feelings arise between two parties. This should be checked. There should be sportsman-like spirit in the players and the spectators. Favourite season I enjoy other seasons as well but for me there is nothing like winter. I feel it is the most delightful period of the year with clear blue skies, no dust around, no any mud and slush on the roads and so cool and comfortable everywhere. I look forward to this season and wait for this it as I would for the arrival of an intimate friend. I feel so great and wonderful during winter enjoying sips of hot tea or coffee with oven fresh pakoras and other snake. Then there are many sweet delicacies like gajar-ka-halwa and other sweets. One can take as much and as many dishes as one wants. The digestion is good and one can go on long walks and take morning exercise in the open. The sarson-ka-sag and makki-ki-roti is my favourite food which is a specialty of the season. During this period the fruit shops are full of many fresh fruits. I like to take orange or carrot juice mixed with lemon, mint and ginger. It refreshes me as nothing else would. Apples also taste most delicious during winter. During winter one can also enjoy dry fruits cashew nuts, wall nuts, almonds and peanuts with jaggery. I also relish very much the sweets prepared with sesame seeds mixed with jaggery or sugar. My mother is an expert in preparing these. She makes a number of such dishes especially for me. Winter is the season when one can be dressed in one’s colourful and comfortable best. How decent and dignified one looks in one’s woolen suits, necktie etc. it is the time when one can use and wear sweaters, pullovers, muffles and shawls. I feel far more healthy, energetic, youthful, active and busy during winter months. I gain in health and can devote long hours to my study and mental work. The days are short and nights long. Nights provide long hours for undisturbed, peaceful and comfortable study in the soft light of a table lamp. During the day one can enjoy soft, warm and golden sun. It gives me immersion pleasure when I sit in the winter sun in our garden or no terrace in a meditative mood for a long time. I have wonderful time during winter in terms of work, rest, study, enjoyment and health. Winter also brings the joy of Christmas and New Year celebration. For Christians these are the biggest occasions in a year for festivity and enjoyment. People of other communities also participate and enjoy these occasions with warmth, enthusiasm and pleasure. There are exchanges of sweets, good wishes and greeting cards. I really wait for the New Year day when I can send to and receive hearty greetings and good wishes for the seasons and the New Year from close friends and relatives. Moreover, I was born in winter and my birthday is celebrated on 13th January every year. I can go on writing in praise of winter for it is such a lovely, fantastic, health giving and enjoyable season. How to cite ï » ¿Environmental Pollution, Papers

wall paper Essays - Fiction With Unreliable Narrators,

rl Maxi Eng 24 D23A Prof: Murray July 28, 2009 Research Paper The Yellow Wallpaper is a story, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Although the work is short, it is one of the most interesting works in existence. Gilman uses literary techniques very well. The symbolism of The Yellow Wall-Paper can be seen and employed after some thought and make sense immediately. The views and ideals of society are often found in literary works. Whether the author is trying to show the ills of society of merely telling a story, culture is woven onto the words. The relationship between the narrator and her husband would be disagreeable to a modern woman?s relationship. Today, most women crave equality with their partner. The reader never learns the name of the narrator, perhaps to give the illusion that she could be any woman. On the very first page of The Yellow Wall-Paper, Gilman illustrates the male dominated society and relationship. It was customary for men to assume that their gender knew what, when, how, and why to do things. John, the narrator?s husband, is a prominent doctor and both his and his wife?s words and actions reflect the aforementioned stereotype: ?John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage,? (9). This statement illustrates the blatant sexism of society at the time. John does not believe that his wife is sick, while she is really suffering from post-partum depression. He neglects to listen to his wife in regard to her thoughts, feelings, and health through this thought pattern. According to h im, there is not anything wrong with his wife except for temporary nerve issues, which should not be serious. By closing her off from the rest of the world, he is taking her away from things that important to her mental state; such as her ability to read and write, her need for human interaction, her need to make her own decisions. All of these are important to all people. This idea of forced rest and relaxation to cure temporary nervous problems was very common at the time. Many doctors prescribed it for their female patients. The narrators husband, brother, and their colleagues all feel that this is the correct way to fix her problem, which is practically nonexistent in their eyes. Throughout the beginning of the story, the narrator tends to buy into the idea that the man is always right and makes excuses for her feelings and his actions and words: ?It is so hard to talk to John about my case, because he is so wise and because he loves me so,? (23). In a good relationship, each partner should be able to express one?s own thoughts and feelings. Honesty in one of the most important characteristics a relationship should have. In this case, the narrator feels that she can not tell him how she feels so as not to upset him and make him mad. When the narrator does attempt to have a discussion with John, she ends up crying and not being able to express herself. John treats her like a child as men believed that crying something that women do and is something that shows weakness. Eventually she begins to become frightened of John and as she goes bad, his normalcy is seen as queer through in her eyes. For a long time it was customary for the house to be able to represent a secure place for a woman. Her house was a woman?s place of residency as well as where women were to do their work and express themselves. In The Yellow Wall-Paper, the house is not even the couple?s own. It is a summer rental and the narrator is forced to reside and spent the majority of her time in a room that is unpleasant to her tastes. This house reverses the traditional symbol of security for the domestic activities of a woman. However, it becomes a place for her to release her words onto paper and eventually to release her grip on reality. The room and many of its features twist the common comforts of a home. The room itself used to be a nursery, which is ironic since the narrator was sent to the house to

The war made a difference in the way the world was scene. There were many causes for the war. These causes include the following; the end of World War I, appeasement policy, expansion of Japanese military and Hitler with his policies of expansionism. The treaty placed guilt and responsibility of World War I on Germany and included territorial clauses that ordered Germany to give up African Colonies and forayed annexation of German Austria. The treaty also ordered Germany to repay 226 billion for the damages caused by the war. This treaty was a major cause for WWII because it wasn’t harsh enough to prevent German y from becoming a world force again. This treaty also managed to upset all Germans. They saw it as unfair. ( pg 751- 752) The Appeasement policy was another cause of WWII. This policy was set in place by France and Britain. It allowed Nazi Germany to have anything it wanted in hopes that Hitler would be appeased and disregard his aggressive policies. Germany entered Rhineland under the Versailles treaty in 1936 and Hitler was forbidden not to. In 1938, German armies entered into Austria and annexed the country. Germany violated the treaty of Versailles in more than one way. Britain and France did not protest the violations in hopes that another war would not occur. Lastly, Hitler and his armies entered the Czech states to take Sudetenland back and France and Britain raised their objections. Hitler proceeded and implied that war was in the making. Galtung and Ruges model of news values

Galtung and Ruges model of news values 1 Using examples from one edition of a newspaper or a television newscast, critically evaluate Galtung and Ruges model of news values and their relevance in contemporary news culture. Galtung J. and Ruge M. (1981) Structuring and Selecting News in Cohen S. and Young J. The Manufacture of News Constable. (You may also find it useful to consult the fuller version of this article in Tunstall J. ed. Media Sociology: A Reader, Constable, 1970). The classic framework. You should also use at least one of the following evaluations: Bell A. (1991) The Language of News Media, Blackwell, p.155-161. INTRODUCTION Johan Galtung and Marie Holmboe Ruge (1965) through their empirical research and theoretical approach on the models of news values defined it as specific standards adhered to by media professionals in the structuring ,selection and production of news stories worthy of reporting to the audience by news reporter, journalist, and broadcasting media professionals also as a general guidelines and criteria that determines the worth of news and how much prominence is given by newspapers, radio, or television reporters. News values are based on a variety of ideas or assumption which form the ideological background to the work of editors, reporters and journalist (Bell,1991).The way in which news is reported is heavily reliable, and dependent on the news providers processing , structuring and reporting of the news content to the audience through newspapers, television, and radio broadcast medium. News values practices both globally and locally can be analyzed alongside Galtung an d Ruges (1967) model of news values providing comprehensive insight to the intentions of the news media industry and their relevance in contemporary news culture practices today both in the national and international news media as reported in the news by these journalist, reporters and media professionals making stories that are newsworthy. Galtung and Ruges model is very straight and comprehensive in its research and academic thoughts on how news are being structured , but not without criticism from other emerging scholars and academia on how relevant these news values can affect other media professionals, reporters, and journalist within in the international scene of contemporary news reporting, structuring and production in the media news values culture . In a recent study, Cohen Young,(1973) Galtung and Ruges models, have also supported and complemented these news values ideology involved in the structure and selection of news and its values making it newsworthy for the audience and readership. There are fundamentals to understanding news production and the choices that editors, producers and other journalists face in decision making on what news values seems more news worthy than another thereby making the media professionals responsible in accounting for the way the news are structured with particular reference to the news values ethical standards, norms and guides in the ideology of model of news values on journalism. Journalist have taken this analysis as a starting point and developed from it a set of principles that should used in identifying newsworthy information. Bell (1991) illustrates Galtung and Ruge news values and discussion on the processes involved in the structuring, presentation and selection news stories report by journalist. These basic twelve news values provide a structural basis for journalists to report stories that are newsworthy to audience ensuring they conform with these ethics. In Galtung and Ruges model, if the news values are adhered to, the story will be successful in reaching, and keeping the public informed and update is largely based on the psychology of perception by the audience, and argues that audiences receive news stories through these factors referred to as the news values which the reporters, journalist and editors are responsible on making these news informative, entertaining in capturing their interest on the way news are consumed. Galtung and Ruge recognised that people cannot absorb very large amounts of news and information, they are choices of selection involved in the information and in doing so only s elect what seems important and of interest to them. It is in this process that journalists and news organization, professionals select and report information to appeal to its main consumers and readership. These news values now come into place, with news producers structuring the news reported around these values to achieve the greatest interest and impact in ensuring it attracts the interest of audience. (CohenYoung, 1973) Galtung and Ruges twelve news values can also be sub-divided , these news values includes the main basic eight universally accepted and the four which he termed can be culturally specific by media reports and journalist as a general factors consisting of frequency, amplitude, unambiguity, meaningfulness, consonance, unexpectedness, continuity, while the other four factors negativity, threshold, cultural proximity are based on the cultural specification varying from national and international source of news processing, selection, and structuring involved in the event of news making and the worthiness of the news values . What we choose or select as news stories could be culturally determined, since the audience and readers cannot accumulate every news content, there is a choice of selection on individual differences, and the probability on how the issues in questions will attract a readers attention or listener (CohenYoung, 1973). These values provide journalists with a mechanism to so rt through quickly, process and select the news from that vast amount of information made available. have taken this analysis as a starting point and developed from it a set of principles that journalists should use to identify newsworthy information. Although Galtung and Ruge model was researched over thirty years ago, it still remains the most adaptable and acceptable news values model until present day in news making and journalism. Most media analysis or discourse of news values will refer to most of Galtung and Ruges classification of news values despite the criticism from other academic scholars and schools of thought, which provides the ideology that important stories which scores highly on each value are likely to become the headline news bulletin, or make the front page of a newspaper stories or television broadcast. Also it is important to note that these news values factors were more implemented by reporters, journalist and media producers in the western and scandinavian countries of Galtung and Ruges model in the structure, selection and reporting of news content which will be critically evaluated from my point of view, though these news values being the dominant model ,it still varies from other national and internati onal news reports, media broadcasting ideologies being practiced across other parts of the globe outside the western countries and north american hemisphere. According to other schools of thought by journalism and media scholars there is no end to lists of news criteria (p. 31). Among the many lists of news values that have been drawn up by scholars and journalists, some like Galtung and Ruges news values model attempts to describe news practices across cultures, while others have become remarkably specific to the press of certain (often western) nations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/News_values). Presently, virtually every media discourse and analytic discussion of news values will refer to most of Galtung and Ruges model of news values models. In critically evaluating Galtung and Ruges twelve models of news values, a British newspaper editorial will be used in citing as a good evaluation analysis on how these news values hypothesis relates to present day processes of selection and structuring of news by editors , reporters, journalist and media professional in contemporary society and its criticism in properly analyzing the realities with reference to Britain newspaper within the western media context, and the news values critically evaluated in both foreign and local news media context on how these news values are being implemented for audience interest. SUN NEWSPAPER CRITICAL EVALUTION OF GALTUNG AND RUGE MODEL In the Sun news paper edition of Thursday, December 17, 2009 with the caption headline JOES GOT FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES illustrates the selection process of newsworthy media text by these newspaper editors to attract the audience readers with such a caption, Galtung and Ruges model analyses the need for inter- relationship of how these news values are being implemented by the news reporters, editors in making the lead front page story which relates to the way news reporting are selected, structured and presented to suit the basic norms and ethics guiding the news values processes in media industry. Cohen Young (1981, pg56) states that structuring and selection of news stories can be highlighted with these news values that the more events concerns elite persons and elite nations activity makes a good newsworthy story in the selection process of the manufacturing of news stories. The front page lead story news headline involves the news values model of elite person and the elite nation with royalties of the government is being implemented by the news editor in making it a headline caption will be more of interest concerning global powers and the impact of the news with relevance on how these news may affect on the home culture and the lives of the people with the national context and specifically on the culture will definitely be the main interest of attention to the readership audience making it newsworthy lead front page story. The news values of meaningfulness with the audience who share same values, culture and ideology will make a good interest point and receive more media c overage which the lead page story of the editorial highlights and the hypothesis of continuity which the story been very accessible to the audience will definitely be included by the reporters in the selection process of the news, making it attractive to audience readership. Galtung and Ruges model that when a news seems to be very important to the audience and still running in media will be of great importance and continued to be covered by reporters for some time.(Bell Bells (1991) evaluation of Galtung and Ruge news values model states that the presentation of a story enhances its chances of being news worthy for audience. The reference to elite person, and elite nation highlighted in the front page headline lead story of the newspaper and the news decision by editors, confirms with the news values ethics of western media industry in implementing these news model making it very favourable news within the competitive market of news media industry in ensuring the news gets to the audiences. The famous and powerful in the society are being treated of being of more importance which the front page story tends to capture as a newsworthy story and how their decision and action can affect peoples life, which is portrayed with the activities of such elite activity and its importance in making a good news from the journalist ideology of news values in contemporary western news culture, because it combines the publics supposed interest with the famous and el ite activity in the news within the cultural proximity of Britain which makes it a newsworthy story. Gatlung and Ruges news values of meaningfulness inter relates in the front page story illustration of the event with the hypothesis of the relevance of these news affecting the lives of the people within the cultural proximity.(Bell,1991) The unambiguity news value model illustrated by Bell, states that the more clear cut a story is, the more it is favoured (Bell,1991) .But critically evaluating these model in the front page lead story on the Sun newspaper editorial , it can be critically evaluated that the editorial publication might not be of interest to someone outside the cultural proximity or geographical context of Britain, and the non -western media axis, from readers in another country and will not attract readership interest based on individual perception within the international and foreign news media context, and may vary from different norms and guides considering the news values and cultures on how reporters and journalist, editors in other non-western countries may stru cture, select and produce their news stories in contemporary news culture and journalism. Galtung and Ruges hypothesis of frequency in the lead story being the royal hierarchy in britain is a point of interest and attention to readers from the reporters and editors implementation of the news story making it a news headline front page story with the impact of the news headlines relating to the meaningfulness of the event, relevance in the lives of the people and the cultural proximity of the british audiences within the national scene, and journalist selection and production of these news stories. In critically evaluating Galtung and Ruges model on the front page story of the Sun Newspaper editorial, it can be evaluated that the use of news codes which the model pays little or no attention to with use of language in the front page story news with the use of photographs was very visible, and also being a newspaper editorial not all aspects of the news values are being captured by these medium. Meanwhile these news values model still remains the most comprehensive school of thought on media and journalism in western countries media on the news information selection and structuring by media reporters, and editors within international news and national news (Cohen Young, 1973). The ideology of the news values model of these front page stories concentrates on the holders of political power not holder of the economic power within the news values. The criticism of these lead page story also centres on some news values model which it categorically states are responsible for the news ,but they are complex issues involved in news making than the SECOND FRONT PAGE LEAD STORY CRITICAL EVALUATION. OF GALTUNG AND RUGE MODEL. The frequency news value hypothesis as evaluated by Bells (1991) in the content of the news states that the best news is something which has only just happened making it definitely to be news worthy for attracting audience interest and readership, The more similar the frequency of the event to the news medium, the more probable that it will be recorded as a news(CohenYoung, 1981). The sub- heading editorial on the front page headline new story with continuation on the second page lead story also has the combination of various news values which are inter- related in ensuring the news editors make a complete and interesting process involved in news selection, structuring to suit the audience. The news values of negativity in the newspaper highlights the editors approach of making the information of concern and interest which seems a Galtung and Ruges model in evaluating these news values model shown with the second page lead story YOUNG N DOLED in the editorial with an emerging situati on on the issues concerns the hypothesis of threshold which hold that the bigger the impact of the story and its relevance on the people , the better it make a good story relates in these second page editorial on the seriousness and will be of interest to audience with such caption headline news making it newsworthy. Galtung and ruges news values of meaningfulness shows that the audience will be attracted to such news , as an event which seems to affect the lives of the audiences seems more relevance as being newsworthy. The cultural proximity of Britain and the impact on how it affects all the people will enhance its newsworthiness to the audience within the international news media agenda. In Bells evaluation on these news values, the negativity hypothesis makes the second page story very understanding on the news selection process by the editors on how the journalist and editor shape the news content and making it very interesting good news process of structuring, selection and p resentation to its reading audience. Though the news has a short fall in the consonance, and composition news values model which doesnt make it a complete news values report by journalism ethics and the reports maybe biased, and inaccurate as a political propaganda by political opponents. Bell (1991) states that negativity news values makes the formal norm of news reporting from historical perspective, that bad news makes a good news story which journalist argue with Galtung and Ruges model of news value and its very conflicting that what attracts audience interest is bad news in media reporting, which seems illustrated in the second page lead story news caption. Bad news stories are more likely to be reported than good news because they are more likely to score high on other news values, such as threshold, unexpectedness, unambiguity and meaningfulness .Thomas(2009) Galtung and Ruges news values with the hypothesis of threshold holds an important issue in the seriousness of the news article and situation affecting the lives of the people. The process involved in the organization, selection and presentation of these news stories from the editors although analysis by J. Galtung and M. Ruge showed that several factors are consistently applied across a range of news organizations on how best these makes up a good news story to the audience.

Meaning of Life and Literary Metaphorical Descriptions Essay

Stuck and chained without any tendency of where your life is headed, requires necessary effort to go through. This is the situation for the main character in Wiliam Lychacks short story, Stolpestad. Without any whereabouts of his life directions, Stolpestad come across his own life through unpleasant confrontations of his own identity loss. â€Å"This is your life, Stolpestad† Stolpestad finds that his life gone tedious, waiting towards the end of each shift, lying and giving an excuse to postpone his arrival back home to his wife and his children. Driving through the city, Stolpestad yearns after his life in the town as child. â€Å"You idle slow and lawful past the house as if to glimpse someone or something – yourself as a boy, perhaps. † Though Stolpestad is aware of the requisite in his absence back home, he decides to go to a bar. At the bar he is telling stories, spreading laughter, about his earlier predicament with shooting the suffering dog. Stolpestad seems full of confidence re-telling the story, but in the certain situation he was nervous and sensitive: â€Å"with this hope that she’s already dead- that shrill of insects in the heat and grass as you nudge her again. You push until she comes to life, her eye opening slow and black to you – you with this hope that the boy will be running any moment to you now, hollering for you to stop. † He wish the dog to already be dead, or that the boy will come hollering him to stop. This nervousness of his comes truly to life when the boy and his father are confronting him, and the surrounding noices frightens him: â€Å"It’s only a door opening – but look how jumpy you are†. Stolpestad finds this confrontation to be a very uncomfortable situations, and feel that it is a repeating element in his life, which is depicted in this paragraph: â€Å"the deja vu of a pickup truck in the driveway as you pull around the house, as if you’ve seen or imagined or been through all of this be- fore, or will be through it all again, over and over†. We can interpret this, from the fact that Stolpestad keeps running into these unpleasant situations. Putting down a suffering dog turns into an unintentional disservice to the dying dog, the boy and his father and himself. The unsuccessful execution and the survival of the suffering dog, Goliath, can be seen as a metaphor for Stolpestads life. The life of the dog Goliath and Stolpestads life are heading in the same direction, Goliaths suffering is a reflection of the suffering in Stolpestads own life. Gully is gravely injured and it is just a matter of time until its’ life will peg out, but even after what was supposed to be an easy put down, the dog remains alive. Stolpestad is neither injured or near death. Stolpestad is caught between the choices whether he shall pursue his meaning of life or leave this world behind. He is stuck as a spectator of his own life, as the dying dog Goliath is a spectator of its’ own death. The injury of the dog can also be interpreted as a simile for the environment and the town Stolpestad lives in. The Christian narrative of â€Å"David and Goliath† deals for Goliaths sake with the themes negativity and failure. The nickname â€Å"Gully† is a synonym for a sewer. That means, that the dogs name in both significances refers to something including degradation and poor environs. Goliath lies on all the trash on the families within the families’ premises and symbolizes the poor social environment that the family hails from. The family is tamped by this inadequacy in the society, which the dog and its name symbolize. The sentence: â€Å"The old tires, empty bottles, paint cans, rusty car axle, refrigerator door† exemplifies what poor environment the family is a part of. The environment of the father may also explain the cause of his ironical compliments of Stolpestads house: â€Å"He lets out a long sigh and says it’s a fine place you seem to have here†. Still this higher league of society does not fit Stolpestad, and it does not seem like he has been in this contrast to the lower league of society his whole life, which also may cause the sympathy he has for the boy. The boy can be interpreted as an illusion of Stolpestad as a child. In the early beginning of the short story, Stolpestad is driving around soulless, looking for something – possibly himself as a child, and after the meeting with the boy, he quickly conceives comprehension of his life situation. This may be caused of Stolpestads own youth, that may have been difficult, but he still may miss: â€Å"Back to all the turns you were born, your whole life spent along the same sad streets† The kind of narrator being used in the story is a â€Å"second person narrator† who writes to a certain â€Å"you†. Our â€Å"you†, who our narrator directs itself to is the main character of the story, Stolpestad. Though it is Stolpestad the narrator direct itself to, the reader feels like being spoken to, when this narrative perspective is being used: †Was toward the end of your shift†. This way a text involves and affects its reader in a whole other level. It is hard to judge whether the narrator is an actual figure or totally absent throughout the story. The narrator does not specifically appear throughout the story, but certain things point to the narrators’ appearance: †away we go†. Still it is doubtful and unknown, who the narrator may be, as the short story does not give an unequivocal explanation of who the narrator might be. The language is both embossed of slang and then the more literary metaphorical descriptions. This shows, how the narrator has authority of changing the style when it fits him. Therefore it is a mixture of the lower style and a formal literary style. Stolpestad is living a life that just passes by, without him taking any action, and therefore he feels like his whole life just consists of continuous repetitions. He is living in the same surroundings as he did in his youth and during his childhood so therefore his external rams haven’t changed, though he has become older. Therefore everything feels recognizable and boring for him. With the description from a second person narrator, who sees Stolpestad from an external perspective, we can connect this to the interpretation of him as a passive individual. He is not even in possession of the authority to tell his own story, but is having it told by another narrator interfering and judging him negatively. Here as well he stands without influence, but may passively let the narrator relate his story, while he himself will have to be a spectator to his own life. So do not just let life pass you by.
